How school admission age is checked
Schools decide eligibility for each entry class (pre-nursery, nursery, KG or Class 1) by your child’s age on a cut-off date, not their age on the day you apply. Two numbers matter:
- The cut-off date – the “age as on” date printed in the admission notice.
- The minimum (and sometimes maximum) age for the class you are applying to.
Under the National Education Policy 2020 structure, the Ministry of Education has advised states and union territories to set the minimum age for Class 1 admission at six years. Each state or UT, and sometimes each board or school, publishes its own cut-off date and age band for every entry class.
For Chandigarh government schools, check the current admission notice from the Department of School Education on chdeducation.gov.in. Punjab and Haryana (for Panchkula) issue their own notices, and private schools may publish separate rules. Examples
Hypothetical figures, used only to show how the calculator works:
- Child born 20 March 2020, cut-off 31 March 2026: age 6 years and 11 days. A minimum age of 6 for Class 1 is met.
- Child born 15 May 2020, same cut-off: age 5 years, 10 months, 16 days. A minimum of 6 is not met, so the child would usually apply for the previous entry class instead.
Frequently asked questions
My child misses the cut-off by a few days. Is there any relaxation?
Some authorities allow a small relaxation and others do not. Only the official admission notice or the school can confirm this.
Which document proves the date of birth?
A birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or registrar is commonly required. Check the admission notice for the accepted documents.
Does the maximum age matter?
Some schools and notices set an upper age for entry classes. Enter it if your notice gives one.
Is my data saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
