CGPA to Percentage Calculator

How CGPA to percentage conversion works

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) summarises your grades on a 10-point scale. Many admission forms and job applications still ask for a percentage, so you need to convert it.

For students assessed under CBSE’s former Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme, CBSE published an indicative formula: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. The same multiplier can be applied to a single subject’s grade point. CBSE described this as an indicative equivalent, not an exact score.

Universities and other boards often use their own formula. Some print it on the back of the marksheet; others publish it in an ordinance or a notice. Use the “Custom” option above and enter the numbers your university gives. If your institution issues an official conversion certificate, always quote that instead of a calculated figure.

Examples

  • A CBSE Class 10 CGPA of 8.6 converts to 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%.
  • A CGPA of 10 converts to 95% under the CBSE formula.
  • If a university’s formula were (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 (an illustrative example only), a CGPA of 7.8 would give (7.8 − 0.5) × 10 = 73%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?

CBSE explained that 9.5 came from the average performance of top-scoring students in its examinations. It is a statistical approximation, which is why the result is called indicative.

Can I use × 9.5 for my college CGPA?

Only if your college or university says so. Many universities use different formulas, so check your marksheet or the university’s official notice first.

Which figure should I write on an application form?

Write exactly what the form asks for. If it asks for a percentage and your institution provides an official conversion, use that. If not, use the formula your board or university publishes and keep a copy of that rule as proof.
